How to Install and Configure LapLink for Your First Local Area Network (LAN) Connection - Search Again

SUMMARY

How do I use LapLink to make a connection using my local area network for the first time?

SOLUTION

One of LapLink’s advantages is its ability to use existing Local Area Networks to make connections between computers. The speed and reliability of network connections makes it one of the fastest methods for transferring files between machines. LapLink supports two types of network protocols:

IPX – The protocol used by the Novell NetWare family of products
TCP/IP – The Internet communications protocol, supported by Microsoft Networking.

Note: LapLink does not support NetBEUI, the protocol used by default in Microsoft Networking. In order for us to work on a Microsoft Network, the network has to use either the TCP/IP protocol, or the IPX/SPX-compatible transport protocol (Microsoft’s version of IPX). If you’re uncertain as to what protocols are installed on your network, check Windows’ Network Neighborhood, or with your network administrator.

To make a LapLink connection for the first time:

  1. Install the LapLink application on both computers. Follow the installation instructions in the LapLink documentation.
  2. Ensure that both computers are connected to the network and are logged in.
  3. Start LapLink on both computers.
  4. Ensure the network ports are configured.
    1. From LapLink's Options menu, click Port Setup.

    2. The Status for TCP/IP or IPX must read Enabled. If not, highlight the protocol used by your network and click Enable Port.

    3. If the port is enabled, click Close.

  5. Change LapLink Security to allow a connection.
    1. From LapLink's Options menu, click Security.

    2. Click either Log-In List or Anybody (Public System).

    3. Click Apply, and then OK.

  6. Make a LapLink connection.
    1. On the Link Bar, click Connect Over, then Network.

    2. Highlight the name of the computer you wish to connect with.

    3. Check the LapLink service that you want to use, and click OK.

If no network connections are found, see Technical document 132, Troubleshooting TCP/IP Network Connections in LapLink Applications or Technical document 120, Troubleshooting an IPX Connection in LapLink Applications for more information.
