How to Restore WINSOCK.DLL on a Windows 98 Machine - Search Again

SUMMARY

LapLink’s TCP/IP port shows as unavailable. I've been told that the WINSOCK.DLL and WSOCK32.DLL files are too old for Windows 98. How do I restore these files so I can use LapLink?

CAUSE

Microsoft's Personal Web Server version 1.0a includes a version of these files that are incorrect for LapLink when it’s installed in Windows 98. There may be other applications that install alternative versions of these files.

SOLUTION

Using the Windows 98 utility, System File Checker (SFC), extract the original WINSOCK.DLL and WSOCK32.DLL files from either your Windows 98 CD-ROM, or from the *.CAB files on your hard drive.

Note: To check the current version of WINSOCK.DLL and WSOCK32.DLL, see Technical Document 97, LapLink Reports the TCP/IP Port as Unavailable for more information.

Using SFC to restore files

Note: Use these steps first for WINSOCK.DLL and then for WSOCK32.DLL

  1. From the Windows Start menu, click Run .

  2. In the Open field, type SFC and press Enter.

  3. Click Extract one file from installation disk.

  4. When prompted for the file name, type WINSOCK.DLL or WSOCK32.DLL

  5. Click Start.

  6. In the Restore from: box, type the path to where SFC will find the original files. Usually this is, [your CD ROM drive]:\WIN98 . For example, if your CD-ROM drive is drive E:, type E:\WIN98

  7. Note: If you have the cab files located on your hard drive, you can instead provide the path to the cab files. For example: C:\Windows\Options\Cabs\Win98
  8. In the Save file to: box, type C:\Windows.

  9. Click OK.

  10. If prompted to save a backup of the existing file, click Yes and accept the default location. The process will finish and then return you to the start of the SFC.

  11. Repeat these steps for the other file. Both files must be restored.

  12. When you have restored both files, reboot your computer, and try the LapLink connection again.
