Error Message: LapLink Reports the TCP/IP Port as Unavailable
- Search Again SUMMARY When I start LapLink, I receive a message that says The TCP/IP network is currently unavailable. You cannot connect over the TCP/IP network until it is configured correctly. I sometimes also have a box on my taskbar that says TBWNSCK that will not go away. I’m able to connect to the Internet, so what’s going on?
SOLUTION Microsoft released a version of it's Personal Web Server that includes an older version of WINSOCK.DLL. This version is incorrect for LapLink when it’s running in Windows 98. The solution is to restore the original WINSOCK.DLL file that was installed in Windows 98. This is done through a utility called System File Checker (SFC). Restoring the default WINSOCK.DLL file does not affect the performance of any Personal Web Server or other programs or connections. Alternatively, customers can update to Personal Web Server, version 4, which does not replace the default WINSOCK.DLL
Identify the version of WINSOCK.DLL in use
- Make sure LapLink is closed and you are not connected to any network or the Internet.
- From the Windows Start menu, point to Find, then Files or Folders .
- In the Named field, type WINSOCK.DLL.
- In the Look In field, confirm that the drive where Windows is installed is listed. Typically, this is your C: drive.
- Click Find Now. The utility will look for, and should find, the WINSOCK.DLL file. This version of the file we are searching for should be located in the C:\Windows directory.
- In the Search results area of the dialog, right-click WINSOCK.DLL, then click Properties.
- Click the Version tab.
- Check the Version number of the file. If it is other than 4.10.1998 or later, then one of the problem versions of WINSOCK.DLL has been installed.
- Note: If the file version is 4.10.1998, then repeat these steps for the file WSOCK32.DLL. If the version is different than that of WINSOCK.DLL, follow the steps to use SFC and restore both files to the Windows default version.
Note: If you continue to have this error and you've restored the files, see Technical Document 132, Troubleshooting TCP/IP Network Connections with LapLink Applications for more information.
Use SFC to restore files
Note: Use these steps first for WINSOCK.DLL and then for WSOCK32.DLL
- From the Windows Start menu, click Run .
- In the Open field, type SFC and press Enter.
- Click Extract one file from installation disk.
- When prompted for the file name, type WINSOCK.DLL or WSOCK32.DLL
- Click Start.
- In the Restore from: box, type the path to where SFC will find the original files. Usually this is, [your CD ROM drive]:\WIN98 . For example, if your CD-ROM drive is drive E:, type E:\WIN98
Note: If you have the cab files located on your hard drive, you can instead provide the path to the cab files. For example: C:\Windows\Options\Cabs\Win98
- In the Save file to: box, type C:\Windows.
- Click OK.
- If prompted to save a backup of the existing file, click Yes and accept the default location. The process will finish and then return you to the start of the SFC.
- Repeat these steps for the other file. Both files must be restored.
- When you have restored both files, reboot your computer, and try the LapLink connection again.
