IPX Connection Freezes When Running in Windows 98 SE - Search Again

SUMMARY

Windows 98 Second Edition has a defect that causes all 32-bit versions of LapLink to freeze when connecting over IPX. Other applications which connect using IPX may experience similar problems. LapLink may successfully locate other LapLink-enabled computers across the IPX network, however, when attempting to open any service (file transfer, remote control, etc.), the connection freezes. Alternatively, the connection may succeed, but performance will be extremely slow.

SOLUTION

The problem is not within the LapLink program, but rather within Windows 98 Second Edition. Specifically, the NDIS layer of the network stack stops responding. Microsoft has produced a hot fix that resolves the problem. Click here to go to Microsoft for the patch. This link references Microsoft Knowledge base article Q243199.

For assistance in obtaining or installing this hot fix, please contact Microsoft.
