Troubleshooting an IPX Connection in LapLink Applications - Search Again SUMMARY I'm having trouble connecting over an IPX network using LapLink in Windows 95 or 98. Is there anything you can suggest to help me? SOLUTION LapLink applications contain a tool for troubleshooting network and other kinds of connections called the LapLink Troubleshooter. To activate it:
- Within LapLink, click on Help, Help Topics
- Click on Start Troubleshooters.
If you continue to have trouble with LapLink and the IPX network connection after using the LapLink Troubleshooter, then try the following suggestions:
- Verify the network drives are visible and can be accessed in Windows 95 or 98 first. Run Explorer or My Computer and try to open the network drives to display their contents.
Note: This step is most important and needs to be done even before running LapLink. If the network drives are not visible or cannot be accessed, it means that Windows 95 or 98 and/or your IPX network is not configured correctly. Consult the Windows 95 or 98 Network Troubleshooter under the Windows Help or check with your Network Administrator for help in setting up and configuring the network.
- Check the type of network adapter and driver. When a NE2000-compatible network card and their 32-bit drivers are used, Windows 95 or 98 and other applications fail to consistently see and access the network drives. In these cases, you will need to change the Windows 95 or 98 Network card configuration from the Enhanced mode (32-bit and 16-bit) NDIS driver to the Real mode (16-bit) driver:
- Right-click on Network Neighborhood and select Properties
- Highlight your network adapter card from the list of components and click on Properties.
- Look at the Driver Type tab and verify the driver that is currently being used. If necessary, change to the Real mode (16-bit) NDIS driver by clicking on that choice.
- Click OK to close the Adapter Properties window.
- Click OK to close the Network Properties window. Windows will prompt you to reboot so the changes can take effect.
Note: If you do not have an NE2000 or compatible network card and are still experiencing network connection problems, you might try switching Windows 95 or 98 to use the Real mode drivers since some cards have difficulty with the 32-bit drivers.
- If LapLink does not see any other LapLink computers on the network, it may be necessary to adjust the Frame Type and Maximum Sockets settings for the IPX network. This is especially true if you are trying to connect a Windows 95 or 98 computer to either a Windows for Workgroups or Windows NT computer.
Note: Before making changes of this kind, write down the current network configuration in case you need to set everything back to the original settings.
- Right click on Network Neighborhood and click on Properties
- Highlight the IPX/SPX-compatible Protocol line that is assigned to your network adapter and click Properties
- Click on the Advanced tab
- Click on Frame Type and set the value to 802.3
- Click on Maximum Sockets and set the value to 40
- Click on Network Address and change the value to the other choice (for example, if currently configured as 0, change to 1 and vice versa).
- Click on OK to close the Protocol Settings window.
- Click on OK to close the Network Properties window. You will be prompted to restart your computer so that the changes will take effect.
After making these changes on at least two computers on the network, try running LapLink again and connecting over the IPX connection
