IP Address Fails to Resolve During a LapLink TCP/IP Connection - Search Again

SUMMARY

When I attempt to make a TCP/IP connection with LapLink, either over my LAN or over the Internet, the connection fails. I may get a message that says Remote Computer is Unavailable, or that the connection has timed out.

CAUSE

A timing error was found in LapLink Professional or LapLink Technical that causes the name resolution for TCP/IP connections to fail.

SOLUTION

There are many reasons why a network connection could fail. Several of these are listed in Technical Document 132, Troubleshooting TCP/IP Network Connections in LapLink Applications. The solutions in that document should be used before addressing the solution offered here.

To determine whether this error is occurring, a specific step in the connection process must be known.

  1. Determine the IP address of the target computer. This is the computer you want to connect to.

    1. From the Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows Millennium Start menu, click Run. Type WINIPCFG.EXE and click OK.

    2. From the Windows NT Start menu, point to Programs, then MS-DOS prompt. At the C:\> prompt, type IPCONFIG.EXE .

  1. In LapLink, click Connect Over....Network, then the TCP/IP Address tab.

  2. Enter the IP address of the target computer into the TCP/IP Name or Address field, and then click OK.

  3. As the connection attempt is made, watch the dialog to see if the IP address changes into the computer name of the target machine. If it does not change before timing out, then the error is occurring. Even if the name is changing, but the connection still fails, it is likely to be this error.

The solution is to upgrade to the current version of LapLink Gold. Upgrade pricing is available when purchased on our web site
