Configuring a NetGear Cable/DSL Router for use with LapLink - Search Again

SUMMARY

How can I configure my NetGear RT311 or RT314 DSL router so that LapLink can make connections over the Internet?

CAUSE

See Technical Document 38, Using LapLink in a Secure Environment for more information.

SOLUTION

Configure the router:
NetGear uses a web interface to configure the router. Point your browser to http://192.168.0.1 on your local network, or type TELNET 192.168.0.1 from the Windows Run command.

Under Menu 21 – Filter Set Configuration: Review your filters and confirm that port 1547 is not blocked otherwise LapLink may not work.

Under Menu 15 – Multiple Server Configuration: On the left column enter port 1547. In the right hand column, specify the IP address of the computer running LapLink.
Note: If you have more than one LapLink computer on your LAN, you will only be able to set up port forwarding for one of your LapLink computers.

To connect to a computer on the network behind the NetGear router:

  1. Determine the external IP address of the NetGear router.

  2. In LapLink, go to Connect over...Network.

  3. Click the TCP/IP tab.

  4. In the Name or Address field, enter External IP address.
Note: If using the external IP address fails, try External IP address:1547
