Configuring a Linksys Broadband Etherfast Cable/DSL Router for use with LapLink - Search Again

SUMMARY

I have a Linksys Broadband series Etherfast Cable/DSL router (models BEFSR11 or BEFSR41). How can I configure the router to allow secure LapLink connections?

CAUSE

See Technical Document 38, Using LapLink in a Secure Environment for more information.

SOLUTION

Linksys uses a web interface to configure the router. Point your browser to http://192.168.1.1 on your local network to access the router. Online documentation for the router is available at ftp://ftp.linksys.com/pdf/befsr41ug.pdf.

Opening Ports:

  1. Locate the Filters page.

  2. Confirm that the following ports are not listed: 1547. If this port is listed, LapLink will not have the necessary access to the Internet.

If you want to connect to a computer on the network behind the Linksys router:
  1. Locate the Forwarding page.

  2. In the left column, enter 1547.

  3. In the right column, enter the internal IP address of your LapLink computer.

  4. Note: If you have more than one LapLink computer on your LAN, you will only be able to set up Port Forwarding for one of your LapLink computers.
  5. Determine the external IP address of the LinkSys router.

  6. When connecting with LapLink, go to Connect over...Network.

  7. Click the TCP/IP tab.

  8. In the Name or Address field, enter External IP address.

If the LapLink connection fails, try this:
  1. Go to the Filters page in the router's web interface.
  2. If Block WAN Request is enabled, disable it.
