How to Manually Install a Printer for Print Redirection - Search Again

SUMMARY

I want to use LapLink for Print Redirection. I'm trying to install my printer from LapLink's Print Redirection Options setup, but my printer is not on the list of printers and LapLink couldn't install off the printer driver disks I have. What do I do now?

SOLUTION

When running the Print Redirection Setup Wizard, LapLink uses the printer data that is contained within the Windows operating system. This list of printers includes all the drivers submitted by various manufacturers at the time that Windows was published, so the list can't be updated as manufacturers introduce newer printer models.

This is further complicated when manufacturers use proprietary drivers or setup programs, rather than ones that conform to the Windows standard *.INF format for installing hardware such as a printer. When that happens, even using the Have Disk option within the wizard will not work.

To remedy this and make the printer available for use with Print Redirection, do the following:

Close the LapLink Application
Install the printer driver from the manufacturer's diskette or CD-ROM, as if the printer was actually attached to your computer.
Note: You may be asked to select a port during installation. Select TSI: (TSI Print Redirector Port)

In Windows 95 or Windows 98 or Windows Millennium:
From the Windows Start menu, point to Settings, then Printers
Right-click on the printer driver you just installed, point to Properties.
Click on the Details tab
In the field labeled Print to the following port, scroll down the list of ports and choose TSI: (TSI Print Redirector Port)
Click on the Spool Settings button
If present, click on the selection to Disable Bi-directional support for this printer.
Click on OK, then Apply, and then OK again.
If desired, you can rename the printer to include LapLink, to help identify it when printing from your applications.
In Windows NT or Windows 2000:

From the Windows Start menu, point to Settings, then Printers
Right-click on the printer driver you just installed, point to Properties.
On the tab called Ports, place a check mark in TSI: (TSI Print Redirector Port)
If present, remove the check mark from Enable bi-directional support
Click on OK
If desired, you can rename the printer to include LapLink, to help identify it when printing from your applications.
Note: Only LapLink 2000 and LapLink Gold are compatible with Windows 2000
