Unable to Configure Remote Control Component on Windows NT - Search Again

SUMMARY

During installation, I receive the error message Setup is unable to configure the Remote Control component. Restart your computer and try again. If the problem persists, contact LapLink.com Technical Support. The installation stops at 80%, and rebooting the computer does not help. What can I do to correct this?

SOLUTION

There are several things that can cause this error message. Check each item below to ensure that installation can complete successfully.

Video Drivers

  • During installation, Laplink must install video drivers. If the video drivers are not present; that is, you are running in VGA mode, see Technical Document 86: How to Install LapLink on a Windows NT System in VGA Mode.

  • The video drivers have not been updated. Check with your manufacturer to ensure that you have WHQL certified drivers. Review the Readme document from the video card manufacturer or Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) and follow the instructions for proper installation of the video drivers.

  • The video settings need to be changed. Depending on how the video manufacturer or OEM dealer wrote the drivers, LapLink may be unable to properly place the Remote Control filters into the video stack. Reducing the color palette may allow LapLink to install properly.

  • Dual video cards can interfere with a LapLink installation because the operating system must load two sets of video drivers during the boot process. LapLink cannot place the Remote Control filters during installation because the operating system cannot specify a driver in which to install the filter. LapLink.com recommends disabling or removing the second video card.

  • Microsoft publishes a list of hardware that is compatible with Windows NT. This list, known as the Hardware Compatibility list (HCL list), contains the current video cards certified as compatible with Windows NT. If your video card is not on this list, it is not supported and a LapLink installation may not be successful. To view the HCL list, paste this URL into your browser window: http://www.microsoft.com/hwtest/hcl

Remote Control or Terminal Emulation Products

  • LapLink.com recommends that you uninstall other remote control products before you install LapLink. Other products place a filter into the video stack, which can prevent LapLink from installing properly.

  • Terminal emulation products can also prevent LapLink from properly installing the required video filters. Uninstalling the product and then installing Laplink ensures a successful installation.

Mouse and Keyboard

If there is no mouse or keyboard installed on the computer, LapLink cannot complete the installation. LapLink must install and transfer keyboard and mouse filters to have a successful Remote Control session. If these drivers are not on the computer or if the current drivers are corrupted, LapLink cannot complete the installation. Installing either a keyboard or mouse will resolve the issue. If one is already present, follow the manufacturer's directions to remove the current keyboard and mouse drivers and reboot the computer to allow Windows NT to redetect them correctly.

Curser Programs
Developers have tried to reduce user boredom by creating programs that modify the mouse drivers. These programs filter and send back content and statistical data to the Web sites for the domain host. These filters can also prevent a successful Laplink installation.
