Vnetsup Error 6106: the String Specified by the Computer Name Keyword in the registry was not found - Search Again SUMMARY I installed the USB Network drivers and after rebooting, I receive the error message Vnetsup Error 6106: the String Specified by the Computer Name Keyword in the registry was not found and I can no longer boot into Windows. What can I do? CAUSE This problem occurs if the computer has already been given a Computer Name and assigned to a network Workgroup before you installed the USB Network drivers. The USB Network driver setup program also attempts to assign this information to your computer, causing a conflict. SOLUTION The solution involves using the original Computer Name and Workgroup assignment during the installation of the USB Network drivers. Here's the steps to restart Windows:
- Reboot your computer.
- Before the Windows logo appears, press F8.
- From the Windows 98 Start Menu, choose Safe Mode Command Prompt only.
Note: If you have problems getting your computer into Safe Mode, see Technical Document 102 How do I Boot into Safe Mode?
- At the C:> prompt, type scanreg /restore.
- Highlight a date prior to when you installed the USB network drivers and press Enter. (This removes all programs or drivers installed since the date you choose.)
- Follow the steps on your screen and restart your computer.
When Windows has booted to your desktop, locate the original Computer Name and Workgroup assignment in the Network Identification Properties:
- From the Windows Start menu, point to Settings and click Control Panel.
- Double-click Network.
- Click the Identification tab.
- Write down the Computer Name and Workgroup information you see.
- Click Close.
- Reinstall the USB Network cable drivers. When prompted by the setup program for a Computer Name and Workgroup, type in the information that you wrote down. Follow the rest of the prompts on your screen to complete the installation of the USB Network drivers.
