Advanced Troubleshooting for Remote Computer Not Available or Reading Services Messages
- Search Again SUMMARY I'm trying to connect my computers using modems, but I get a message that says, Remote Computer Not Available. Other times I see Reading Services or Waiting for Callback in the dialog after the modems disconnect. I've checked my Security settings, and there are no callbacks requested. I've also checked Technical Document 5819, 'Remote Computer Not Available' or 'Reading Services' messages. Can you help?
SOLUTION There may be a combination of solutions. We suggest that these changes be made first to the guest (computer that dials out) computer. If the problem persists, make the changes on the host (computer receiving the call) computer.
For computers running in Windows 95, 98/SE or Millennium
- From LapLink's Options menu, click Port Setup.
- Highlight Windows Modem, and click Enable Port. Make sure the status changes to Disabled.
- Highlight the COM port used by the modem, and click Modem in the Type box.
- Click Customize, then New.
- Replace User-defined Modem with the name of your modem.
- Click in the Initialization field, and clear out the current contents. Scroll right and left to confirm that the field is empty.
- Type in one of the following initialization strings. Type them in exactly as they are written here.
^M~AT&F1E0&Q0^M ^M~AT&F1E0\N0\C0%C0^M If the modem is a US Robotics modem, try this list of strings
^M~AT&F1E0S12=0^M ^M~AT&F1E0&K3&M0S12=0^M ^M~AT&F1E0&K0&M0S12=0^M Note: Use the numeric 0, not the letter O in all of these strings.
- Click on OK.
- Change the Speed to 38,400 until the connection is successful.
- Then raise the baud rate to the highest possible speed that maintains a connection.
- Click OK, then click Enable Port.
Note: A warning message may appear about modems that are controlled by Windows TAPI will appear. This message means that while LapLink is in memory, it will have complete control of the modem. When LapLink is shutdown, the modem will be available for any other application.
- If prompted, configure the Security settings as your needs require.
- If the port enables, then try the LapLink modem connection again.
If the port does not enable, confirm the following:
- that the Windows modem has been disabled
- the correct COM port was selected
- the initialization string was typed correctly
- that no other communication applications are currently open
For computers running Windows 3.x
- Open the SYSTEM.INI in Notepad, and check the communications drivers.
- If different that this list, insert REM at the beginning of the current drivers.
- Add new lines that look like these.
[boot] section comm.drv=comm.drv [386Enh] section device=*vcd device=*combuff
Note: Do not return to the default settings if the modifications are required to support a PCMCIA card.
