How to Install and Configure LapLink for Your First Modem Connection - Search Again SUMMARY How do I use LapLink to make a modem connection for the first time? SOLUTION LapLink supports making connections between computers using telephone lines and modems. To make a LapLink connection for the first time:
- Install the LapLink application on both computers.
How you received your LapLink software will dictate how the software is installed. Follow the installation instructions in the LapLink documentation to load LapLink on both computers.
- Ensure the modems are installed on each machine within Windows.
- From the Windows Start menu, point to Setting, then Control Panel and click on Modems.
- If Windows starts an Add New modem wizard, you have no modem installed. Refer to your system or modem documentation for installation instructions.
- Start LapLink on both computers. LapLink must be running on both computers on order to make a connection.
- Ensure the modem port is configured.
- In LapLink, click on the Options menu, click on Port Setup.
- At the top of the list of ports, look for the Windows Modem port and make sure it is Enabled.
- If the port shows disabled, enable it by selecting the port and checking the Enable Port box.
- On the machine that will receive the incoming modem call, click on Configure and ensure that AutoAnswer is enabled.
- If the ports are enabled successfully, click on Close.
- Ensure LapLink Security is set to allow a connection. On the host machine (the one being connected to), LapLink needs to be set to allow incoming connections.
- In LapLink, click on the Options menu, click on Security
- Three options are presented for whom to allow connections from: Nobody, Log-in List and Anybody. To allow an incoming connection, select either Log-In List or Anybody.
Note: Significant changes have been made to the security settings in LapLink 2000. If you are connecting between LapLink 2000 and a different version of LapLink, see Technical Document 33: Changes to LapLink 2000 Passwords
- Make a LapLink connection.
- In LapLink, click on Connect Over on the Link bar.
- Click on Modem
- A Connect Over Modem dialog box appears. Select Manual Dial.
- In the Phone Number field, enter the phone number for the modem on the Host machine. Be sure to include 1 and the area code if it’s a long distance call.
- Click on Dial. LapLink will then attempt to dial and connect between the two machines.
Note: Commonly used telephone numbers, UserIDs and Passwords can be saved into LapLink’s Address Book. We recommend that the connection be successfully tested with the Manual Dial option prior to using the Address Book
