Error Message: Insufficient Drive Space Error Message when Installing LapLink to Windows NT or Windows 2000 - Search Again SUMMARY Installation of any version of LapLink onto a Windows NT machine gives a Dr. Watson error message in file _INSO432_MP.exe, or, a message that The setup program is unable to determine the amount of free disk space in the destination folder.
Users may also see a destination folder path that lacks a drive letter. Attempts to correct the destination path may result in additional error messages about the availability of drive space.
Review of the destination drive indicates that sufficient space is available.
SOLUTION The solution may require one or more of the following steps:
- Confirm that the latest Windows NT Service Pack has been freshly installed.
- Use the Windows Registry Editor to modify a registry key value that may be corrupted.
Warning: This next step requires using the Registry Editor to make changes. Incorrectly using the Registry Editor can cause serious, system-wide problem that may require you to reinstall Windows NT to correct them. Backup your registry before continuing. See Technical Document 111: How do I Backup and Restore the Windows Registry? for more information.
- From the Windows Start menu, click Run.
- In the Open line, type REGEDT32.EXE.
- In the left windows, navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SOFTWARE \Microsoft \WindowsNT\CurrentVersion \Winlogon
- Double-click the Shell line on the right side of the screen. The Edit String dialog appears with EXPLORER.EXE highlighted in the Value Data edit field.
- Press the right arrow key.
- Press the backspace key until only EXPLORER.EXE appears in the edit field.
Note: There may be an extra blank space or other extraneous characters in the edit field. This is what needs to be removed.
- Click OK.
- Close REGEDT32.
- Restart the computer, and retry the installation of LapLink.
If the Shell line isn't present in this key, it needs to be added through the following steps:
- Click Edit and then Add Value .
- In the Value Name field, type Shell. The Data Type should be REG_SZ.
- Click OK .
- In the String field, type EXPLORER.EXE and click OK.
- Restart the computer, and retry the installation of LapLink.
