LapLink Fails to Connect Using the USB Network Cable - Search Again

SUMMARY

I installed the USB Network cable and am unable to connect. No computers appear in the Available Now box when I click Connect over... USB Network. What can I do?

SOLUTION

LapLink.com has identified some issues with packet broadcasting when using the USB Network cable. As a workaround, you need to set a static IP address for the USB Network Adapter on both computers.

For a machine running Windows 98 or Windows Millennium

  1. Close all open programs.

  2. From the Windows Start Menu, point to Settings and click Control Panel

  3. Double click Network

  4. Double click TCP > USB-USB Network Bridge Adapter

  5. On the IP Address tab type:

  6. For the first computer:
    172.29.61.1 for the IP Address
    255.255.0.0 for the Subnet Mask

    For the second computer:
    172.29.61.2 for the IP Address
    255.255.0.0 for the Subnet Mask

Note: If you have the USB Network Cable installed on a third machine, you will need to use 172.29.61.3 for the IP Address and 255.255.0.0 for the Subnet Mask. Click OK

  7. Click OK

  8. Click Yes to restart your compute

.
For a machine running Windows 2000
  1. Close all open programs.

  2. From the Windows Start Menu, point to Settings, then Network and Dial-Up Connections

  3. Right-click the Local Area Connection for the USB-USB Network Bridge Adapter, and click Properties

  4. Double click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

  5. Click Use the following IP address.

  6. On the IP Address tab enter:

  7. For the first computer:
    172.29.61.1 for the IP Address
    255.255.0.0 for the Subnet Mask

    For the second computer:
    172.29.61.2 for the IP Address
    255.255.0.0 for the Subnet Mask

Note: If you have the USB Network Cable installed on a third machine, you will need to use 172.29.61.3 for the IP Address and 255.255.0.0 for the Subnet Mask.

  8. Click OK

The LapLink USB Network Cable is now configured to use a static IP address. To connect, please follow these steps:

  1. Launch LapLink on both computers.

  2. Attached the USB Network cable to both systems.

  3. In LapLink, click Connect Over... USB Network

  4. Click on the TCP/IP Addresses tab

  5. In the TCP/IP name or address box, type the IP address of the computer you wish to connect

  6. In the Services area, select the LapLink service you wish to use upon connecting

  7. Click OK

You can automate this connection by creating an Address Book entry. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. From the LapLink Link bar, click the Address book icon.

  2. Click Add.

  3. Type in a descriptive name in the Description field.

  4. Type in the LapLink computer name of the computer you are connecting to in the Computer Name field.

  5. From the Connection Type drop down list, click Network: TCP/IP Address.

  6. Type in the static IP address of the computer you are connecting to
