PCsync Fails to Connect Using the USB Network Cable - Search Again

SUMMARY

I installed the USB Network cable and am unable to connect. No computers appear under My USB Connections. What can I do?

SOLUTION

LapLink.com has identified some issues with packet broadcasting when using the USB Network cable. As a workaround, you need to set a static IP address for the USB Network Adapter on both computers.

For a machine running Windows 98 or Windows Millennium

  1. Close all open programs

  2. From the Windows Start Menu, point to Settings and click Control Panel

  3. Double-click Network

  4. Double-click either TCP -> USB-USB Network Bridge Adapter or TCP -> LapLink USB Network cable

  5. On the IP Address tab type:

  6. For the first computer:

    172.29.61.1 for the IP Address
    255.255.0.0 for the Subnet Mask

    For the second computer:
    172.29.61.2 for the IP Address
    255.255.0.0 for the Subnet Mask

Note: If you have the USB Network Cable installed on a third machine, you will need to use 172.29.61.3 for the IP Address and 255.255.0.0 for the Subnet Mask. Click OK

  7. Click OK

  8. Click Yes to restart your computer.

For a machine running Windows 2000

  1. Close all open programs.

  2. From the Windows Start Menu, point to Settings, then Network and Dial-Up Connections

  3. Right-click the Local Area Connection for the USB-USB Network Bridge Adapteror TCP -> LapLink USB Network cable, and click Properties .

  4. Note: Pause your mouse over each Local Area Connection to have a description of the connection appear.
  5. Double click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

  6. Click Use the following IP address.

  7. On the IP Address tab enter:

  8. For the first computer:
    172.29.61.1 for the IP Address
    255.255.0.0 for the Subnet Mask

    For the second computer:
    172.29.61.2 for the IP Address
    255.255.0.0 for the Subnet Mask

Note: If you have the USB Network Cable installed on a third machine, you will need to use 172.29.61.3 for the IP Address and 255.255.0.0 for the Subnet Mask.

  9. Click OK

The PCsync USB Network Cable is now configured to use a static IP address. Simply open PCsync on both machines and plug the USB network cable securely into your machine. In the PCsync tree pane, double click My USB Connections.
