Unable to Connect to Laptops with USB floppy drives - Search Again

SUMMARY

I am trying to use a LapLink product to connect to my laptop that has a USB floppy drive. The connection appears to start, but I never see the laptop's drives in the file transfer or My Computer pane. What can I do?

CAUSE

LapLink, PCsync and FileSync gathers information such as disk size and available space from all reported drives when a connection occurs. In some instances Windows falsely reports that a USB floppy drive is currently attached to the laptop, even though it is disconnected. When LapLink, PCsync or FileSync attempt to get information from the drive, Windows takes about 10 minutes to timeout. Windows Explorer has the same problem if you try to read the A: drive.

SOLUTION

This problem has identified on Toshiba Protégé laptops where the BIOS is falsely reporting to Windows that the USB floppy drive is attached when the computer boots up, when in fact the drive is not attached.

There are two possible solutions:

  1. Reboot the computer with the floppy drive attached. Then remove the floppy drive if you choose.

  2. Download and install updated floppy disk drivers from Toshiba.

It is possible that other laptops with USB floppy drives will encounter this problem.
