PCsync Connects and Randomly Disconnects when Using a Serial Connection - Search Again

 

SUMMARY

When I try to connect PCsync with the serial cable, the connection is very unstable. What can I do?

 

CAUSE

The most frequent reason for an unstable connection is another program running in the background. Depending on the version of Windows used on the computer, there are different ways of shutting down or disabling programs that cause problems.

 

SOLUTION


  • If you use a handheld computer, such as a Palm Pilot, reconfigure the HotSync software to connect manually.

    1. Right-click the HotSync Manager icon in the System Tray.

    2. Click Settings.

    3. Click the choice that lets you start the program manually.

    4. Restart Windows and try PCsync again.

  • Shut down any programs that you have running in the background. Do this on both computers.

  • For computers running Windows 95, Windows 98/Millennium
    1. Hold down the Ctrl, the Alt and the Del keys at the same time.
    2. Highlight a program except Explorer and SysTray, and click End Task.

    3. Repeat Step 1 and 2 until Explorer and SysTray are the only remaining programs.

    4. Try the PCsync transfer again.


  • Restart the computer without any applications loading. Do this on both computers.

  • For computers running Windows 98/Millennium
    1. From the Windows Start menu, go to Run and type MSCONFIG.

    2. Click OK.

    3. In the System Configuration Utility, click to select Selective Startup then clear the check box Load Startup Group items.

    4. Click OK and reboot the computer when prompted.

    5. Try the PCsync transfer again.


    For computers running Windows 95
    1. Right-click the Start button and click Open.

    2. Double-click the Programs icon.

    3. Double-click the Startup icon. If you see any program icons, drag all icons to your desktop.

    4. Reboot the computer.

    5. Try the PCsync transfer again.

    For computers running Windows NT/2000
    1. Right-click the Start button and click Open All Users.

    2. Double-click the Programs icon.

    3. Double-click the Startup icon. If you see any program icons, drag all icons to your desktop. Close any open windows.

    4. From the Windows Start menu, go to Run and type REGEDIT and click OK.

    5. From the Registry Editor's Registry menu, click Export Registry File.

    6. In the Save In box, click Desktop.

    7. In Export Range, click All.

    8. In File Name, enter BACKUP and click Save.

    9. Navigate to the following location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion.

    10. Look for the Run and Run Services folders.

    11. Click each folder and press the Delete key on the keyboard.

    12. Click Yes.

    13. Close the Registry Editor and reboot the computer.

    14. Retry the PCsync connection. If the connection still fails, double-click the BACKUP file on the desktop to restore the Registry. You may delete the BACKUP file after restoring


If the connection succeeds after shutting down or disabling all programs, you can isolate the single program or smaller group of programs that causes the problem, by systematically shutting down or disabling a single program and then trying the PCsync connection again. Programs that use serial ports, infrared ports or modems are the usual suspects.
