How Do I Modify the Security Features in LapLink? - Search Again

SUMMARY

I know that LapLink offers various security features. How do I set these features?

SOLUTION

LapLink’s security settings can be accessed in two ways:

  1. Click the toolbar icon that looks like a security lock.

  2. Point to the Options menu and click on Security from the menu.

LapLink offers four levels of security:

  1. The Nobody setting is the default until you change your security settings. This option does not allow other users to access your machine.

  2. The Log-in List Only (Protected System) setting allows only certain people to access your computer. This option provides for a greater degree of security then the Anybody (Public System) option. If the log-in list is clicked, only people with a log-in name and password will be able to access your computer.

  3. The log-in list is maintained on the host. To Add a user to the list:
    1. Open the Log-in List:

      • In LapLink 2000, click on the Log-In List button on the General tab.

      • In LapLink Professional, LapLink Tech and earlier versions of LapLink, click on the Log-In List tab.

    2. Click on Add. This brings up the Add User dialogue.

    3. Type the person’s name in the Log-in Name box

    4. Type in their password in the Password Box. (You will be prompted to enter it twice for confirmation).

    5. Under Services, you can click on the services the user will have permission to access, such as file transfer or remote control. If you click on remote control, you can grant the user permission to blank your computer screen or to lock your keyboard or mouse

    6. You can set modem callback features for that particular user by clicking on one of the following options, depending on the level of security desired:

      • None

      • Optional any number

      • Optional specified number only

      • Required any number

      • Required specified number only

Place the call back number in the Phone Number box. If call back is set, the user will enter their log-in name and password and then be prompted with a message about the call back feature.

  4. The Anybody (Public System) setting will give anyone running LapLink the ability to access the host machine. If you choose this option, you will also need to select which services will be available to users when they access your machine. If you chose Remote Control, you can also grant users the permission to blank your screen or lock your keyboard or mouse. These options are all available on the Security page, General tab.

  5. The Local Security and Encryption tabs provide additional protection for your computer. Features include:

    • The Protect Local Security with a Password option, found on the Local Security tab, prohibits a user from changing your security settings, address book entries, or other security options.

    • The Enforce Security for Local Connections option enforces security for cable and wireless connections. Normally, these connections are not protected by General Security, since the computers are normally in view of each other when they are connected.

    • The Encryption tab allows you to choose to encrypt all data being sent by LapLink. By default, log-in names and passwords are automatically encrypted
