Windows Requests a Password after Installing the USB Network Cable or PCsync's Serial Network Cable - Search Again

SUMMARY

I have just installed the USB Network cable or the Serial Network Cable for PCsync. Now whenever I start my computer, Windows asks me for a password. What causes this, and what do I do?

CAUSE

The reason that you now get this password request is that installing the USB Network cable drivers adds network drivers to your computer where none existed previously. Both the serial and USB cables use network drivers to connect. You will also notice that your desktop now has a Network Neighborhood or My Network Places icon.

SOLUTION

To keep the password request from appearing, try these suggestions:

The First Time
When you see the request, leave the password field empty and click Cancel. (This only works on some computers, and only works the first time that you see the request).

Change the Windows Logon

  1. Right-click Network Neighborhood or My Network Places, and click Properties.

  2. Click the Configuration tab. On the Windows logon drop down list, change to Microsoft Family logon or Windows logon.

  3. Click OK and reboot. (This solution does not work on all computers).

Edit the Registry to set the AutoLogon Value
  1. From the Windows Start menu, click Run and type REGEDIT. Click OK.

  2. Backup your registry. See Technical Document 111, How Do I Backup and Restore the Windows Registry? for more information.

  3. In the left window, navigate until you open this folder: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Network\Real Mode Net

  4. From the Edit menu, click New, Binary Value

  5. Change the name from New Value to AutoLogon

  6. Right-click AutoLogon and click Modify.

  7. Type 0. Click OK

  8. Close the Registry Editor and reboot your computer.

  9. b>Note: The AutoLogon value must be BINARY and must be set to 00 for AutoLogon to work.
