Error Message: Kmode Exception Error occurs after Installing LapLink on a Thinkpad 770 Running Windows 2000 - Search Again

SUMMARY

I have a ThinkPad 770x or 770z that is running Windows 2000 and I have tried to install LapLink. When I reboot after the installing, I am no longer able to boot normally into Windows 2000. I receive a blue screen with a Kmode Exception error message.

SOLUTION

To run LapLink on a ThinkPad 770x or 770z , the graphics acceleration on the Trident Cybervision 9397 video adapter must be changed.

  1. Reboot the computer to Windows Safe Mode or VGA Mode. See Technical Document 102: How do I Boot to Safe Mode for more information.

  2. From the Windows Start menu, go to Programs, then LapLink and click Uninstall. Reboot after uninstalling to insure that the computer can boot to the Windows desktop.

  3. From the Windows Start menu, go to Settings, then Control Panel.

  4. Double-click Display.

  5. Click the Settings tab and then the Advanced button.

  6. Click the Troubleshooting tab and slide the bar so that the arrow is on the second notch from None. A message will be displayed beneath saying Disable all DirectDraw and Direct 3D accelerations as well as all cursor and advanced drawing accelerations. Use this setting to correct severe problems with DirectX accelerated applications.

  7. Click Apply then OK.

  8. The computer is now ready to reinstall LapLink.

  9. The computer is now ready to reinstall LapLink.

Note: LapLink customers who want to make a serial connection will encounter problems until the BIOS has been properly configured. See Technical Document 54: COM Ports will not Enable on a ThinkPad Machine 770x or 770z Running Windows 2000 for more information.
