Directing a Printer Driver to FILE: These devices can be temporarily set to the port FILE: in the Windows Control Panel. This prevents the device from querying the LPTx port to which the LapLink cable has been attached.

In Windows 3.x, here are the steps to do that:

  1. Open the Main group, start the Control Panel
  2. Double-click the Printers icon
  3. Click to highlight the printer driver, and click on Connect
  4. Under Local Port, select FILE
  5. Click on Close/OK

In Windows 95 or 98, here are the steps to do that:

  1. From the Windows Start menu, point to Settings, then Printers
  2. Right-click on the printer icon, and click on Properties
  3. Click on the Details tab Under Print to the following port, select FILE: (Creates files on disk)
  4. Click on Apply/OK

When you have finished using LapLink, reassign the printers to their normal port (usually LPT1). Follow these same steps.

  5. Note: Within Windows 95 or 98, if you wish to permanently disable the polling of ports, see Technical Document 108, How to Disable a Printer Bi-directional Support

End-Tasking

Some Windows 95 or 98 applications load drivers when Windows starts up. These drivers can cause conflicts for LapLink. These drivers can temporarily be removed by following these steps:

  1. Use the Ctrl, Alt and Del keys simultaneously.
  2. In the Close Program list, click to highlight the offending item
  3. Click on End Task
  4. Repeat for each offending item

Note: Do not End-Task Explorer, as this will shut down Windows.
