HP LaserJet 5 Printer Driver Interferes with a LapLink Parallel Connection - Search Again

SUMMARY

The default installation of Hewlett-Packard Laser Jet 5 printer drivers interferes with a LapLink connection over the parallel port. This is because the printer driver periodically signals the port.

SOLUTION

This can be remedied by following these steps:

  1. Uninstall the HP5L driver using the uninstall program in the HP5L Windows group.

  2. Reinstall the HP5L driver using the Custom setting:

    1. Change the default HP Host Driver to HP PCL Driver

    2. Deselect the PCL Status Window by clicking on the box.

  3. Continue installation.

  4. Recommended additional changes once installation is complete:

    1. Change Print Quality Option setting from Auto to Manual

    2. Change Graphics setting to HP-GL

In Windows 95 or 98, there is also the option of disabling bi-directional printer support.

  1. From the Windows Start menu, point to Settings, then to Printers

  2. Right-click on the HP5L printer driver and click on Properties

  3. On the Details tab click on Spool Settings

  4. Ensure that Disable bi-directional support for this printer is either selected or grayed out

  5. Click on Apply, and then OK
