SUMMARY

I have a LapLink product installed on my computer running Windows 95 or 98. When I start the program, I receive an error message such as: LapLink has caused an illegal operation LapLink has caused an invalid page fault in module KERNEL32.dll LapLink has caused an invalid page fault in module TSIRCH16.dll A Fatal Exception 0E has occurred…

SOLUTION

There are several solutions that can solve this problem.

Rename the LapLink initialization file:

For computers running Wndows 95 or Windows 98/Windows 98 Second edition:

  1. From the Windows Start menu, point to Find, Files/Folders

  2. In the Named box type LLW.INI.

  3. In the LookIn box, choose your C driv

  4. Right-click on the file name in the search results windows and choose Rename.

  5. Rename the file to LLW.ICK

  6. After changing the name, press the Enter key.

  7. Restart LapLink. There will be messages that ask you to enter a new computer name. Use the same computer name that you’d used previously. When prompted to enable a port, click on No.

  8. Exit LapLink

  9. Restart LapLink. When prompted to enable a port, click on Yes, and enable the single port that you wish to use for a connection. Leave all others disabled at this time.

For computers running Windows Millenium:
  1. From the Windows Start Menu point to Search and click on For Files and Folders

  2. In the Search for Files or Folders Named box type LLW.ini

  3. In the Look In box choose your C drive

  5. Rename the file to LLW.ICK

  7. Exit LapLink

  8. Restart LapLink. When prompted to enable a port, click on Yes, and enable the single port that you wish to use for a connection. Leave all others disabled at this tim

The video driver may be interfering with LapLink as it loads. If you suspect this:
Reduce the number of colors displayed:
  1. From the Windows Start menu, point to Settings, click on Control Panel

  2. Double click on Display.

  3. Click on the Settings tab.

  4. Determine the number of colors being displayed. If it is greater than 16-bit (Hi-Color), reduce the color settings and apply. Reboot and try to launch LapLink again.

  5. If the same error occurs, repeat the above and reduce the colors to 256 colors.

  6. Reboot and launch LapLink again

  7. Reduce the amount of hardware acceleration:

  8. From the Windows Start Menu, point to Settings and click on Control Panel

  9. Double click on System

  10. Click on the Performance tab

  11. In the Advanced Settings section, click on Graphics.

  12. You are presented with a slider representing the amount of hardware acceleration. It is normally set to Full. Reduce the amount of acceleration one setting at a time. After each change, reboot the computer and attempt to launch LapLink.

  13. If reducing colors and acceleration fails to correct the error, replace the video driver with the Windows Standard VGA driver. For instructions on how to do this, see Technical Document 119, How to Configure a Video Card to use a Standard VGA driver

Uninstall and reinstall LapLink, ensuring that no other Windows software is running during the installation. If possible, suspend or close your virus scan software during the installation.
