Getting Connected Using The Serial Cable - Search Again

SUMMARY

How do I connect LapLink using the blue cable that came in the box?

SOLUTION

LapLink's blue serial cable connects two computers by the external serial ports and provides the maximum data transfer rates possible using a serial port. The cable has two ends. One contains a single 9-pin connector; the other contains both a 9-pin and 25-pin connector. Older model PCs may come with 25-pin serial ports. Use only one connector from each end of the cable to create a successful connection.

To make a serial connection between two computers:

  1. Install the LapLink software on both computers.

  2. Locate the external serial ports on your machine. These are normally located on the back of your computer. Serial ports are male in gender (pins) and are either 9 or 25 in number. They may be labeled as COM, SERIAL, or by the icon |0|0|.

  3. Plug one connector from each end of the LapLink serial cable into a serial port on each computer. Look for the port label where you plugged in the cable.

  4. From the Windows Start menu, point to Programs, then point to LapLink Gold and click LapLink.

  5. From LapLink's Options menu, click Security. You will see three choices: Nobody, Log-in List and Anybody. To allow an incoming connection, click either Log-In List or Anybody. Do this on both machines.

LapLink should now establish a connection automatically between the two PCs. If it does not do so, please follow the steps in one of the following technical documents, depending on your operating system:

Technical Document 92, Troubleshooting a Serial Connection in Win3x
Technical Document 131, Troubleshooting a Serial Connection in Win9x
Technical Document 84, Troubleshooting a Serial Connection in WinNT
