PCsync Frequently Asked Questions - Search Again

SUMMARY

I have some general questions about PCsync version 1.0.

SOLUTION

Why do I need to use a descriptive name when I set up an Internet Drive or a Remote Shared Folder?

The descriptive name is a simple, easy to remember name for the connection. This name appears in the PCSync tree window below the type of connection. You can use any name in this field.

What files are transferred when I use the Copy My Files Wizard?

The Copy My Files Wizard copies files to your new computer in two stages. First, your entire My Documents folder is copied to the My Documents folder on your new computer. Next, files that match the types you selected from the list are copied into the Lost and Found subfolder in your new computer's My Document folder. The name of the Lost and Found folder can be changed.

How do I use the four parts of the PCsync screen?

The four parts are called panes.

The upper left pane is called the PCsync tree pane. This shows all connection options for your computer, SmartXchanges, Internet Drives and Remote Shared Folders. It also lists "Add New..." wizards for Internet Drives and Remote Shared Folders.

The upper right pane is called the PCsync list pane. It displays the contents of the drive or folder for your current connection or lists details for My Cable Connections, Remote Shared Folders, Internet Drives and SmartXchange.

The lower left pane is call the My Computer tree pane. You can browse all of the local and network drives of your computer just like using Windows Explorer. When you click on a folder to browse it the contents appear in the lower right pane that is called the My Computer list pane.

How do I know PCsync is connected?

When you are connected, PCsync displays a lightening bolt over the connection in the PCsync tree pane.

Can I use drag and drop to transfer files?

Yes. Click to select the files in either of the list panes and drag to the other list pane.

What is the difference between a file transfer and the Copy My Files wizard?

PCsync transfers files from one computer to another in many different ways and over all of PCsync's connections. Drag and drop is a standard method or you can automate a frequent file transfer by creating a SmartXchange. The Copy My Files wizard is a easy tool to do a single kind of file transfer over only a cable connection. It is designed to search for and copy all of your personal files from your old computer to your new computer.

Where do I set up the ports for my cable connections?

PCsync automatically enables any serial or USB port that Windows reports is available. In most cases, you don't have to make any changes after you install either the serial or the USB network adapters. To check that the port you've connected the cable to is enabled, go to PCsync's Options menu and click Port Status.

Note: If you have a Palm Device that uses COM1, you will need to disable COM1 in PCsync.

Why aren't my files appearing immediately in the list pane after doing a SmartXchange?

Generally the files will be the last item in the list. If you do not immediately see the synchronized files, simply press F5 on your keyboard and PCSync will refresh.

Why does SmartXchange take so long when synchronizing to My Computer?

If you choose a root level drive (for example, C: ) in My Computer as one of the items to synchronize, PCsync reads all the files on the drive. If the drive is very full or very large it will take a long time. The time can be decreased if you select only folders to be synchronized.

Where can I download the version of MS Java that PCsync requires?

PCsync includes Java on the installation CD-ROM. It can also be downloaded from http://www.microsoft.com/java/vm/dl_vm40.htm

PCsync requires MS Java version 5.00.3309 or later be installed on the computers that run Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT or Windows Millennium. Computers running Windows 2000 do not have this requirement.

Where can I download Windows Sockets 2.0 that PCsync requires?

Windows Sockets 2.0 can be downloaded from Microsoft's Windows 95 Download Center at http://www.microsoft.com/windows95/downloads. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on Windows Sockets 2 Upgrade.

You can also visit www.laplink.com\support and click on Updates and Patches.

What causes an error in the file WS2_32.dll?
This error occurs on Windows 95 systems which do not have Windows Sockets 2.0 installed on the computer.

Can I have more than one serial and USB network connection at the same time?

PCsync allows for only one serial or USB network connection at a time. It is possible, however, to have both the serial and the USB network adapters installed.

Do you have to be logged on as Administrator to a Windows 2000 or NT machine to install?

Yes, PCsync (and the USB drivers on Windows 2000) will not install correctly unless you have local administrative rights to the machine.

Will Pcsync work with my firewall software?

All firewall programs are different but most can be configured to allow PCsync to work. We recommend that you initially exit the firewall program first to ensure that the connection made in PCsync.
