SETTING UP HYPER TERMINAL IN WIN-98 (Revised 17 June 2000 for Win-98) For those that would like to check to see if their GPS receiver is sending data (usually NMEA sentences) in through the serial port, Hyper Terminal can display the data by the following steps: In Garmin receivers, set the I/O to: NONE/NMEA 183 2.0, 4800 baud. Note: Newer Garmin GPS units have NMEA and GARMIN/HOST modes instead of NONE/NMEA and GRMN/GRMN modes. 1. Under the Start Menu, select: Programs, Accessories, Communications, Hyper Terminal. 2. Double click on Hypertrm.exe for a "New Connection". 3. Assign a Name and Icon for the new connection. 4. In the Phone Number menu, "Connect using", select your Com port. 5. In Com* Properties, select the proper Bits per second (4800) Data bits 8, Pairty 'None', Stop bita '1', and Flow Control 'None'. 6. Type OK and then exit the blank screen. 8. When asked if you want to "save the session," type "Y". 9. The Icon and its name will appear on the Hyper Terminal page. 10. Right click on the Icon to make a shortcut. NMEA data should appear when all is connected properly. ALTERNATE TEST WITHOUT THE GARMIN 1. Make a small-wire connection in the Garmin-end serial cable 4-pin plug with the cable disconnected from the Garmin. 2. The connection should be between the 2nd and 4th pin socket (reading clockwize from the plug key). 3. With this connection, you can see on Hyper Terminal anything you type on the keyboard. 4. Ctrl-Enter, Enter, gives you a carriage-returm/line feed. Thanks to Paul McAdams for this one. DATA TRANSFER: 1. Change the Garmin to the GRMN (or GARMIN or HOST) mode. 2. To up and download data, there are two free programs, Waypoint+ and G7ToWin in the URLs below: http://www.tapr.org/~kh2z/Waypoint/ http://www.gpsinformation.org/ronh/ Jack Yeazel
