                Windows Installation errors - "This Application Has Performed an Illegal
Operation"
                =====================================================
The most common errors associated with DeLorme software result from other programs running in
the background during installation.  While there may be no other programs in the task bar or
you may have just started your computer, it is necessary to make sure there is nothing running
in the background prior to installation.  We suggest that if you are getting an "Illegal
Operation" error message or the program is simply not performing as expected, please follow the
instructions below:

First, restart your computer.  When Windows has restarted;

* In Windows 95 press CTRL, ALT and DELETE on your keyboard and 'End Task' everything except
"Explorer" [must be done one at a time].

* In Windows 3.x press CTRL, ESC on your keyboard and 'End Task' everything except "Program
Manager" [must be done one at a time].

Next, uninstall the DeLorme program.

* In Windows 95, choose START, SETTINGS, CONTROL PANEL, and double-click 'Add/Remove Programs'.
Select the DeLorme program you need to remove and click the Add/Remove button.   Click YES when
asked "Are you sure...".

* In Windows 3.x, open the DeLorme program group and double-click on the appropriate UNINSTALL
icon for the DeLorme program you are removing.  Click YES when asked "Are you sure...".

Finally, reinstall the software following the instructions in the introductory guide and the
program should perform normally from that point forward.

                2.  Dirty or Damaged CDs "Error Reading Drive D: Disk may require cleaning..."
                =========================================================

If you are getting a blue-screen error that says "Error Reading Drive D: Disk may require
cleaning...", or if the DeLorme program CD simply fails to initialize (i.e., spins and spins
and never loads, wobbles in the drive or has become scratched or cracked) it may need to be
replaced.  See the CONTACT information at the end of this document for Customer Service contact
information.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Before contacting DeLorme for replacement CDs, we request that you first
vigorously wash the CD's clear bottom side with warm soapy water using the palm of your hand
and rinse and dry it with a lint-free cloth.  Also, inspect it closely for any physical damage
such as cracks or major scratches.  The most frequent cause of problems listed above is a
"dirty" CD.  We have discovered that even a brand new CD right out of the box may have an
invisible residue or film left-over from the manufacturing process that may prevent the CD from
being read and initialized by the CD-ROM drive.  Washing the CD as described above usually
takes care of the problem.

If washing the CD fails to get the program to work, or more importantly, if the disk appears to
be damaged, cracked, scratched or actually wobbles in the CD ROM drive, please contact the
Customer Service Department at 800-511-2459 to request a replacement CD.

                3.  Printing
                ========
Most printing problems are related to the use of an outdated printer driver or video card
driver.  In these cases, we recommend contacting the manufacturers to obtain updated device
drivers for both peripherals and install them into the system.  All printer and video card
manufacturer update their drivers on a regular basis and make them [the updated drivers] freely
available as a service to their customers.

The easiest way to obtain the updated drivers is via the Internet.  If you point your browser
to http://www.winfiles.com, you will open a Web page full of links to printer, video card,
CD-ROM and other peripheral manufacturers, as well as direct links to each manufacturers'
driver download pages.  If you do not have Internet access, your printer and video card
manufacturers are usually more than willing to send you the updated drivers you require on
floppy disks via regular mail. See Technical Device Support Numbers for some device
manufacturers' phone numbers.

Minor Roads Will Not Print:
====================

If the DeLorme printout fails to print the minor roads, place names are not appearing where
they should be, or map features are illegible in any way, please read the "Out-of-Date drivers"
section above. This problem can usually be resolved by updating the printer and video drivers
on your system.

For early HP Deskjets Models 500, 500C, 520, 540, 560 and 560C:
===============================================

In order to print consistently with DeLorme software, some specific printer settings must be
engaged.  Close the DeLorme program and follow the instructions below.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Ultimately, the directions below will set-up the printer permanently to work
with DeLorme software.  If you do not want the changes to be permanent on your system, please
open the DeLorme program, pull down the File menu, select 'Print Setup' and continue following
the specific setup instructions below.  Making the changes through the DeLorme program will
apply only to the DeLorme program and will last for that one session only.  In other words,
you'll need to make the changes each time you open the DeLorme program.

* In Windows 95, choose START, SETTINGS, PRINTERS.  Right-click the DeskJet Printer icon and
select 'Properties' from the pop-up menu.  In the ColorSmart setup screen, in the 'Printout'
options, select 'Color Photo' .  Click the OPTIONS button and set the 'Halftoning' option to
'Cluster' and click OK all the way out.  If you see a check mark in the ICM box, remove it.
Close the Printer window and return to the DeLorme program. Your printing problem should be
resolved.

* In Windows 3.x, open the MAIN program group and double-click the Control Panel icon.  In the
Control Panel, double-click the Printers icon.  Select the desired printer and click the
'Setup' button.  In the ColorSmart screen, click the HELP button and check for the DRIVER
VERSION.  To print consistently with DeLorme software, the HP ColorSmart driver must be at
least version 6.1.  If you are using a driver earlier than version 6.1, you must obtain the
latest drivers from HP and install them into your system [see the Outdated Drivers section
above for more information about obtaining drivers via the Internet].  Once you have obtained
and installed new drivers or you confirm that you are already using at least driver version
6.1, you can close the HELP screen and continue.  In the ColorSmart screen, if you see a check
mark in the ICM box, remove it.  In the 'Printout' options, select 'Color Photo'. Click the
OPTIONS button, in the 'Halftoning' options, select 'Cluster' and clic!
!
k OK all the way out.  Close the Printer window, close the Control Panel and return to the
DeLorme program Your printing problem should be resolved.

Canon BJC printers - minor roads missing from the printouts:
============================================

See Out-of-Date Drivers above.

Troubleshooting Printing on Canon Bubble Jet Printers:
=======================================

Try the following settings for the Canon Bubble Jet printer using version 3.70 or higher of the
print driver from Canon:

>From within our software choose FILE...Print Setup...Options (Windows 3.x) or properties
(Windows 95).  click the GRAPHICS tab and set the print quality to Normal, Color Model to
Color, Print Model to Custom...Options.  Set your halftoning option to DIFFUSION, and the Color
Adjustment to Auto.  This should solve the BJC printing problems.

If you have the driver for the Canon 610, use these settings:
In the Printer control panels for your printer, make the following adjustments to your
settings:
Graphics Tab
Color Mode: Auto Adjusted Color
Halftoning: Solid
Quality Tab
Resolution Settings: 360X360
Media: Plain Paper
Print Quality: Photographic
Details Tab
Spool settings: Print Directly to the Printer
OK these changes, and this should solve your printing problems.

If you are using a Canon 600 driver:
In the Printer control panels for your printer, make the following adjustments to your
settings:
Graphics Tab
Resolution: 360
Dithering: Coarse or Fine
Color: Color Control: Print in Color without image color matching
Details Tab
Spool settings: Print Directly to the Printer
OK these changes, and this should solve your printing problems.

Laser Printer Settings - Incomplete Printouts - Half Page - Memory Overflows, etc.:
===========================================================

If the program is printing half-pages, the printer is reporting "Memory Overflows", route
symbols or roads are printing solid black or if the map is "bleeding through" your MapNotes,
title and/or legend, your printer may not be setup properly.  In order for your DeLorme program
to print consistently with your laser printer, there are some specific printer settings to
make, as follows:

In Windows 95, from within the DeLorme software, pull down the File menu, select Printer Setup,
click the Properties button and make the following adjustments:

Fonts: Print True Type as Graphics
Graphics Mode:   Raster
Graphics Quality:  High
Halftoning:   Photographic Images (if applicable)
Resolution: 300 or 600 dpi based on the amount of memory the printer has [see below]

With 2 MB of printer memory or less, you can print up to 300dpi
With 6 MB of printer memory or more, you can print up to 600dpi

Device Options:  Printer Memory: MB setting must match the amount of actual printer MB
installed.
Current Driver version: It is recommended that you use the latest printer drivers available.
The driver version can be found in the 'About' section. If you do not have the appropriate
driver, or if you do not know if you are using the most recent printer driver available, you
can contact the printer manufacturer or visit their Web site to download the latest printer
drivers for your model printer.  Please see the "Outdated Drivers" section above for more
information.

Route Numbers Not Printing

==========================
See "Laser Printer Settings" section above

Printing outside border
====================
Some HP Laserjet and Deskjet printer drivers may print some or all of the road names over or
outside the map's borders.  This is the result of the printer driver's inability to handle the
video capture printing routines our software is performing.  We have made HP aware of this
issue and we have been assured that HP will investigate the matter and possibly work on a fix.
If an updated HP driver becomes available that fixes the problems, it'll likely be in the form
of a printer driver version update. Check with HP regularly to update the printer driver when a
new version is released.

                4.  Video Lockup/Freeze - Outdated Video Drivers
                ====================================
If the DeLorme program will not load, locks up at the DeLorme logo, begins to draw the map and
freezes or locks up when panning or zooming the map, you are experiencing video conflicts.
Video conflicts are usually related to the use of an outdated video card driver.  In these
cases, we recommend contacting the manufacturer of your video card, obtaining updated drivers
and installing them on your system [see the "Outdated Drivers" section above for more
information about obtaining updated drivers via the Internet].

No map:
======

If no map is displaying when you open the program it may due to one or more different issues.

* First see Installation Errors & Dirty or Damaged CD under General Problems.

* FOR STREET ATLAS USA 5.0 USERS:

Make sure you are using the RUNTIME CD-ROM when you open Street Atlas USA 5.0.  If this is the
case and you are still not getting any map data; you will need to make sure the program is
looking at the correct drive letter for the CD-ROM.  Choose Start...Run from the task bar and
type the following:

C:\Atlas5\Utils\Osmosis.exe

When the Osmosis utility opens, enter the drive letter of you CD-ROM, followed by a colon (for
example, D:).  Then click the Set Path button.  You should get a prompt that reads:
The necessary adjustments have been made to run Street Atlas USA 5.0 from <letter of the drive
you entered>.

Now when you open Street Atlas USA 5.0 with the Runtime CD in the drive, you will see maps.

*If you still are not getting maps see Out-of-Date Video Drivers

No Secondary Roads
=================
Try reducing the amount of resources dedicated to your video driver as follows:

1.  From your desktop, right-click the My Computer icon and select Properties from the pop-up
menu.
2.  In the System Properties window, click the Performance tab and then click the Graphics
button on the bottom-center.
3.  In the Graphics window, if the slider control is all the way over to the right [full], drag
it back to the far left [none] and click the OK button.
4.  Clicking OK in the Graphics window takes you back to the System Properties window where you
click the Close button.  The system will tell you that you need to restart Windows.  Click OK
and let the Windows operating system automatically restart.
5.  Open the DeLorme program.  It should work normally.

This is a common problem and making the changes above should not adversely affect any other
programs or system performance.

Partial Map Draw/Lock-Up on Map Draw
=================================
Most likely you have an ATI Graphics Pro Turbo PCI Mach64 video card.  Contact the ATI
Technologies company (either via the Internet at http://www.atitech.ca or by phone at
416-882-2600)  to download and install the most recent video card driver for your model video
card.

Then test the program with your new ATI video card driver.  If the program still does not
perform well,  uninstall and reinstall the program with the new video driver in place.

One of the early video drivers for the Diamond Viper 330 video card did not work.  Diamond has
released a new set of drivers that will remedy the problem.  Go to:
http://www.diamondmm.com/products/drivers/viperv330.html

Download either version 4.10.01.0024 or version 4.10.01.0025.  Once the driver is installed on
your system your Street Atlas USA 5.0 will work.

                SPECIFIC ERROR MESSAGES
                -----------------------

***VERY IMPORTANT FOR WINDOWS 3.1 USERS***
Check the size of your Windows Virtual Memory Swap file. Choose Main...Control Panel...386
Enhanced...Virtual Memory.  The virtual memory type must be set to permanent, and at least
12,288 KB in size, but preferably 24,576 KB.  This space must be located on an uncompressed
drive. If you need to change the size or type (or both) of the swap file, click the CHANGE
button on the right. The window expands so that you can make the appropriate changes.  Once you
make your changes, Windows will prompt you to restart. Click the Restart Windows button when
prompted.

If you had to make changes to your swap file, and Windows has restarted, your next step is to
close all background programs and remove Win32s either manually or automatically (follow
instructions included below ). Then see Installation Errors and Dirty or Damaged CDs under
TROUBLESHOOTING.

Win32s or Unhandled Exception Detected
===================================
These error messages usually come from a corrupt installation of the Win32s engine.  You will
need to remove it, then reinstall the DeLorme program.

*To remove the Win32s from your system (Automatically):

Shut down all applications running in the fore- and background on your system using the Task
List (CTRL-ESC) and the End Task button until the only item left is PROGRAM MANAGER.  When this
is complete, click the File menu and select Run.  In the Run window, click Browse, select your
CD-ROM drive from the pull-down menu, select the REGISTER directory (AAA Map'n'Go 2.0), UTILITY
directory (Street Atlas USA 4.0),  or UTIL directory (AAA Map'n'Go 3.0) and double-click the
file named CLEANER.EXE.  Click OK on the WARNING screen to proceed.  When prompted for a
password, enter the numeric password "766".  When prompted for "Have you shut down all
applications..." click Yes and allow the utility to perform its uninstall function.

When this is complete, close Windows, restart your computer and Windows, shut down all
applications running in the fore- and background, then uninstall and reinstall your DeLorme
program.

*To remove the Win32s from your PC manually:

1. Remove the following line from your WINDOWS SYSTEM.INI file in the [386Enh] section:
device=c:\windows\system\win32s\w32s.386

2.  Modify the following lines from the [BOOT] section in your SYSTEM.INI file [BOOT] section:

drivers=mmsystem.dll winmm16.dll

remove ONLY the WINMM16.DLL portion of the line, leaving any of the other dlls on the line.

3.  Exit to DOS

4.  Change directories to your C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM and delete the
WIN32S.INI, W32SYS.DLL, WIN32S16.DLL,  and WINMM16.DLL files.
USE THE
DEL WIN32S.INI  command from the prompt.
DEL W32S.DLL command from the prompt.
DEL WIN32S16.DLL command from the prompt.
DEL WINMM16.DLL command from the prompt.

5.  Delete the entire WIN32S sub directory with the following command: DELTREE WIN32S.
6.  Restart Windows and uninstall and reinstall your DeLorme Program.

Msvcrt.dll "This version of Msvcrt.dll is for Win32s only"
========================================
Any error messages with either Msvcrt40.dll, Msvcrt20.dll, Msvcrt.dll or Msvcirt.dll.  Locate
the following files:

msvcrt20.dll,msvcrt40.dll

and rename them to:

msvcrt20.dlx,msvcrt40.dlx

You will probably find these files in both your Windows and Windows\System directories.  You
will need to rename these files in DOS, using the RENAME command.  For example, at the DOS
prompt (c:\windows) you will type:

rename msvcrt20.dll msvcrt20.dlx

Then open Windows and uninstall and reinstall the DeLorme program.

Version 5.0
==========

Ctl3d32.dll
==========
"The version of ctl3d32.dll is for Windows NT only".  To correct this, copy the version of
ctl3d32.dll to the C:\windows\system directory (overwriting the existing file) from the
following URL:

ftp://www.delorme.com/novell

This will fix the problems with the Ctl3d32.dll file.

Address to Address Routing
=======================
Type any addresses you want to route to and from in the text fields next to the button with the
green and red dots on them.  Don't use the number pad.  It is a navigational tool in our
software.  Use the number keys above the letter keys.  Here are some tips when using addresses:

1. Don't use capital letters.  Searches yield more results with lowercase.  (e.g., 100 elm
street)
2. Don't put punctuation at the end of abbreviations.
3. You do not need to enter the entire street address.  All you need is street and ZIP Code,
separated by a comma.

The looser the search, the better.  If you put in an exact address it will only look for an
exact match.

Not accessing the CD or no map when starting the program
=======================
First make sure the Runtime CD-ROM is in the drive when you launch Street Atlas USA 5.0.  If
this is the case and you are still not getting any map data; you will need to make sure the
program is looking at the correct drive letter for the CD-ROM.  Go to Start...Run and type in
the following:

C:\Atlas5\Utils\Osmosis.exe

When the Osmosis utility comes up, enter in the drive letter of you CD-ROM followed by a colon
(for example, D:). Then click the Set Path button.  You should get a prompt that reads:
The necessary adjustments have been made to run Street Atlas USA 5.0 from <letter of the drive
you entered>.

Now when you run Street Atlas USA 5.0 with the Runtime CD-ROM in the drive, you will see maps.

Illegal Operations or Could Not Create Tour Book
=======================================
If Street Atlas USA 5.0 gives you an illegal operation error message when starting up,
calculating a route, accessing point of interest information or printing, point your Web
browser to:
http://www.delorme.com/support/streetatlas/839.htm
Included there is the following information:

The error messages "SA5.exe Caused an Invalid Page Fault" and "Unable to Create Empty Document"
are usually caused by improper installation and subsequent problems with the Windows system
registry. Uninstall and reinstall Street Atlas USA 5.0. Be sure that all other applications are
shut down before reinstalling.

Try to run Street Atlas USA 5.0 again. If the program still will not run, you can try
registering the individual files with Windows. There are a total of 13 files that need to be
registered on all operating systems; 14 files if you are using Windows NT.
Follow the procedure below to register these files in your Windows\System or WinNT\System
directory:
* mfc42.dll
* oc30.dll
* olepro32.dll
* oleaut32.dll
* msrd2x35.dll
* msvbvm50.dll
* comcat.dll
* dssock32.ocx
* mscomm32.ocx
1.      Insert the Street Atlas USA 5.0 Setup disc into your CD-ROM drive and choose Start...
Run... from the task bar.
2.      In the command line text box, type: "d:\program\regsvr32" (where d: is the letter of
your CD-ROM drive). NOTE: Do not type the quotation marks.
3.      Enter a space and the name of the file to be registered, for example,
"c:\windows\system\mfc42.dll". NOTE: Windows NT users, type "winnt" instead of "windows" where
applicable.
4.      Click OK.
5.      Repeat steps 2-4, replacing "c:\windows\system\mfc42.dll" with the next file to be
registered (e.g., "c:\windows\system\oc30.dll").
6.      Continue until all files have been registered. If any file fails, make sure the path of
the file is correct and try again.

After registering these files, try to run Street Atlas USA 5.0 again. If the program still will
not run, follow the above procedure to register all of the OCX files in the Atlas5 directory
(e.g., "c:\atlas5\wandrls2.ocx"). The OCX files are:
* Wandrls2.ocx
* NetLink.ocx
* DeLGPS.ocx
NOTE: Register DeLGPS.ocx last.
After registering these files, try to run Street Atlas USA 5.0 again. If the program still will
not run, follow the above procedure to register the Dao350.dll file.

Windows 95 users, enter the path: "c:\progra~1\common~1\micros~1\dao\dao350.dll". Windows NT
users, enter the path: "c:\winnt\msapps\dao\dao350.dll".

Windows NT only:
If the program still will not run, follow the above procedure to register the MFC42u.dll file
located in the WinNT\System32 directory (i.e., "c:\winnt\system32\mfc42u.dll").

Operating Errors:
If you are experiencing any of the following problems, try registering the specific OCX file
indicated:
* Errors activating any or all GPS dialogs.
Try registering DeLGPS.ocx.
* Errors when using on-line features.
Try registering NetLink.ocx.
* Errors or inactivity when calculating a route.
Try registering Wandrls2.ocx.

Mac Errors (General Troubleshooting)
================================
Shut down all control panels and all extensions except CD-ROM and APPLE GUIDE.  Create a new
temporary folder within your system folder called "DeLorme Extensions Disabled".  When this new
folder is created, you can click and drag items from the Extension Folder into the DeLorme
Extensions Disabled folder.  You may want to select and drag all into the DeLorme Extensions
Disabled folder, then click and drag APPLE CD-ROM and APPLE GUIDE back into the extensions
folder. (APPEARANCE IS NEEDED FOR SYSTEM 8.0 AND HIGHER USERS.)

Follow the same instructions (above) to create a new system folder called "DeLorme Control
Panels Disabled".  Drag ALL control panels into this folder, leaving none in the original
Control Panels system folder.

Then remove the Atlas4/Atlas4 PPC folder and any Street Atlas USA Preferences from your hard
drive.  Empty the trash.  With this done, restart your computer and reinstall the program.  If
Street Atlas USA works properly, one (or more) of your extensions or control panels was causing
a conflict. Follow the directions below to attempt to identify the conflict:

You can begin narrowing down the possibilities by turning a series of five extensions back on
and restarting the computer and testing the program.  If Street Atlas USA does NOT work, one or
more of the extensions you turned back on is causing the conflict. Continue adding in groups of
extensions until you identify the conflicting extension. Then shut down that extension(s) prior
to opening the DeLorme program to eliminate the conflict.

GpsTripmate Problems
===============
1. Disable the AppleTalk option in the CHOOSER (Except PowerBook 3400 users)

2. Make sure you try both the Modem and Printer port options.

We have experienced instances in which the Global Village modem card interferes with
GpsTripmate accessing your modem/printer port. Make sure that you have disabled AppleTalk from
within your "Chooser". You also need to disable the Global Village card from your modem control
panel. Restart your computer, open Street Atlas USA 4.0, and select "modem" in your Initialize
GPS window. Also make sure that your system date/time coincide with the date/time in your
Initialize GPS window.

To initialize your GpsTripmate receiver:  Make sure that the receiver has a clear view of the
sky.
>From the Street Atlas USA 4.0 screen, choose GPS...Initialize, select TRIPMATE and the port.

VERY IMPORTANT!!!

If initializing to a state is giving you any problems, try initializing to exact lat/lon
coordinates. In the Initialize GPS window, click the down arrow in the location section, scroll
to the top of the state list and select LAST LOCATION (at the very top of the list).

Make sure that the latitude is a positive number and the longitude is a negative number.  If
not you will end up on the wrong side of the globe, and see a blank map.

Make sure that the time and date are accurate, and the time zone is correct (GMT must be at a
minus 5 for the Eastern time zone, minus 6 for Central, minus 7 for Mountain, and minus 8 for
Pacific).  Click OK.

Click OK.
Choose GPS...Monitor GPS.

This should give you an acquiring satellites message. A dot where you are located appears on
the map and turns green when the receiver has initialized.

For PowerBook 3400 users:
Go to the AppleTalk control panel and switch the connection to the Infra Red Port (IR Talk)
setting.

Failed to Create Empty Document, Unable to Create Tour Bookor Performed an Illegal Operation
=========================================================================

During our Software installation Map 'N Go looks on your system for certain files that should
be registered with Windows.  Other pieces of software install the files but do not register
them.  Common error messages associated with this problem:  'Unable to create tour book',- 'Run
Time error 424' when launching Update, 'Failed to create empty document',  'Win32s errors'

Error 429
=======

The error 429 when accessing map notes in AAA Map'n'Go 4.0 seems to be caused by an incorrect
registry entry for a shared file we believe is installed by another program.  The first thing
we should try is renaming the following files, all located in the C:\Windows\System directory,
with a .dlx or .oxx extension.  To rename, open Windows Explorer (Start, Programs, Windows
Explorer), go to the C:\Windows\System directory, locate one of the files below, right-click on
it, choose rename, and change the extension from .dll to .dlx or .ocx to .oxx.

olepro32.dll
ctl3d32.dll
msvcrt40.dll
comdlg32.ocx
comctl32.ocx

Once the files are renamed, reinstall AAA Map'n'Go 4.0 and it will install fresh copies of the
files.

Using AAA Map'n'Go with Street Atlas USA
=====================================
If you have Street Atlas USA 4.0 (not Street Atlas USA 5.0), you can download maps of specific
geographic areas from its CD to AAA Map'n'Go 3.0. Street Atlas USA 4.0 provides street-level
detail of the entire United States. So, if you have a particular area in AAA Map'n'Go 3.0 that
you would like to see street-level detail for, you can extract it from Street Atlas USA 4.0.

A separate application, called Extractor, loads with Street Atlas USA 4.0 during the
installation process. Double-click the Extractor icon in the DeLorme Program group and follow
the screen directions. Select the region(s) you want to extract from the Choose Regions list
box by clicking on an entry. When you've made your selection(s), click the Next button, confirm
the screen information and click Extract. Extractor will save the data for those regions into a
subdirectory entitled MapData in your C:\Aaamng3 directory.

Performed an Illegal Operation or Unable to Create Tour Book
================================================
If you are getting either of the above error messages point your Web browser to:
http://www.delorme.com/support/mng/813.htm

AAA Map'n'Go 3.0 requires that certain OCX and DLL files be registered with the operating
system. Below is an explanation of the registering procedure and tips on registering them by
hand.
The following messages indicate the specific OCX or DLL files that should be registered:
* Unable to create Tour Book
First try registering RICHTX32.OCX, MCI32.OCX and OLEPRO32.DLL
* Win32s errors launching program
First try registering WANDRLST.OCX, VIEWER0.OCX, OLEPRO32.DLL and, for Win95 and NT users,
DAO3032.DLL and MSRD2X32.DLL
* Errors activating any or all GPS dialogs
First try registering UGPS32.OCX
* Run Time Error 424 when launching Update
First try registering OC25.DLL and DAO2516.DLL with REGSVR.EXE
There are a total of eight files on all operating systems that need to be registered:
[WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory]
OLEPRO32.DLL
MFC40.DLL
MCI32.OCX
RICHTX32.OCX
UGPS32.OCX
[AAAMNG3 directory]
WANDRLST.OCX
VIEWER0.OCX
NETLINK.OCX
Procedure for Registering Files
1.      Click on Start...Run...Browse. Find the working directory for AAA Map'n'Go 3.0 (the
default is c:\aaamng3). Windows 3.1x users will need to select File...Run...Browse from the
Program Manager.
2.      Click once on regsvr32.exe to highlight it. Click OK.
3.      The command line should read:
c:\aaamng3\regsvr32.exe
4.      Type a space after regsvr32.exe and the name of the file to be registered, for example
c:\windows\system\olepro32.dll. The command line will look like this:
c:\aaamng3\regsvr32.exe c:\windows\system\olepro32.dll
5.      Click OK.
6.      Repeat steps 1-5, replacing c:\windows\system\olepro32.dll with the next file to be
registered.
7.      Repeat step 6, until all files have been registered. If any file fails, please check
that you have entered the full path to the file to be registered.
Windows 3.1x users will need to register two additional DLLs.
OC25.DLL (located in the \windows\system directory)
DAO2516.DLL (located in the \windows\system directory)
These files are 16-bit and are registered with the REGSVR.EXE program located on the root of
the CD.
Windows 95 and NT users will need to register four additional DLLs and one additional OCX:
MSRD2X32.DLL (located in the \windows\system directory)
OC30.DLL (located in the \windows\system directory)
DAO3032.DLL (located in \program files\common files\microsoft shared\dao)
DSSOCK32.OCX (located in the \windows\system directory)
MSCOMM32.OCX (located in the \windows\system directory)
* Since the location of DAO3032.DLL contains long file names, the easiest way to register this
file is to click Start...Run and type:
d:\regsvr32 c:\progra~1\common~1\micros~1\dao\dao3032.dll
* Note: On WindowsNT DAO3032.DLL is located in the \windows\msapps\dao directory.

General Suggestions
==================
Some tips on searching:

1. Don't use capitals.  Searches yield more results with lowercase.  (e.g., 100 elm street)
2. Don't put punctuation at the end of abbreviations.
3. If you search on a name and don't get it, try some wild card searches.  (e.g.,  jones, frank
try jones, f or just jones)

The looser the search, the better.  If you put in an exact address or phone number it will only
look for an exact match.

Higher Speed CD-ROM Drives
========================
The problems you're experiencing with Phone Search USA are likely due to the fact that your
fast CD-ROM drive is unable to open the large data files that comprise the Phone Search USA 3.0
program.  When it was released in April, 1997, the fastest CD-ROM drive available was a 12X
drive.  We tested the program extensively on all makes and models that were currently available
at that time and it worked flawlessly.

However, since the release of the Phone Search USA 3.0 program, there have been significant
improvements to CD-ROM drive speeds that create a backward compatibility problem with regard to
Phone Search USA.  In other words, the latest 16X, 18X, 20X, 24X and now 32X CD-ROM drives may
have a difficult time opening the Phone Search USA CDs.  If this is the case, you can try
running the program on a computer that has a slower CD-ROM drive. If you've purchased the
program within the last 30 days, you can call DeLorme's Customer Service Department at
800-511-2459 to obtain a refund for the program.

                GpsTripmate
                -----------

No GPS Detected or Could Not Open COM Port
=======================================
If the PC has an infra-red port, it has been shipped from the manufacturer with the 9-pin
serial port pre-configured to work only with infra-red devices.  As the GpsTripmate is a
standard, non-infra-red serial device, the com port must be reconfigured to remove infra-red in
order to initialize GpsTripmate.  We have spoken with a variety of technical support
departments from many manufacturers and the they have urged us to direct customers experiencing
this problem to their department for assistance. We recommend contacting your PC manufacturer's
technical support department and request that they assist you in COMPLETELY DISABLING the
infra-red com port settings through the following areas: Laptop Features, System BIOS and
Device Manager from within the Windows 95 System Properties interface if running Windows 95.

Also point your Web browser to:
http://www.delorme.com/support/windows/908.htm
Included there is the following information:

"I'm Having GPS Problems. How do I know if the problem is with my system or my COM port?"
This document can help Windows users determine if their GPS problem is system related or COM
port related. In Windows go into either terminal (Windows 3.11) or Hyperterminal (Windows 95)
and connect directly to the COM port that your receiver is hooked to. Choose 4800, 8, n, 1, for
settings. You should see a constant repeating down the page of:
ASTRAL
ASTRAL
ASTRAL
This is an indication that the receiver is functioning properly and is sending information
through the COM port. If you don't see anything or see something other than the repeating
"ASTRAL", Windows may not recognize the port, and may need to be reconfigured in the Control
Panel.
Troubleshooting for Windows 95
To check the COM port in Windows 95, choose Start...Programs...Accessories... Hyperterminal.
Open the hyperterminal.exe, enter test for the name, and click OK.
Then select Direct to COM Port 1 at the bottom of the window, selecting the correct port. Then
click OK. On this next screen, select 4800 baud, 8,n,1, then OK. You should see a long string,
($gp..$gp..) Receiver is functioning properly and sending information through the COM port. If
you do not get any information, please go to File, Properties, and select another COM port.
Check System/Device Manager/COM 1/Port settings/Advanced/Advanced Port Settings/Buffer These
settings may need to be decreased.
Your COM port may be reserved in your system BIOS. You will need to contact the manufacturer of
your computer to find out how to free up the COM port in your BIOS.
In the BIOS setup check that the serial port is enabled with the proper IRQ for COM Port 1.
In the BIOS setup check that the serial time-out is turned Off.
Troubleshooting Windows 3.1
Go to Accessories, then select the Terminal. Go to Settings and then Communications, and select
COM port 1. Set the terminal to 4800, 8, n, 1. Click OK. You should see a line of GPS strings.
If so, you have both your COM port and cable configured properly.
Newer PCs are being built with faster COM ports. These COM ports are being built with built-in
FIFO buffers (hardware) to obtain greater transmission speeds. When receiver tries to attach to
the selected COM port, Windows attempts to open the port and the buffer.
This may cause Windows to hang, or to report 'no GPS detected.'
You may need to turn off your fast COM ports:
To do this, go into the SYSTEM.INI file.
In the [386Enh] section of the SYSTEM.INI file, add the following line comXfifo=0, (where X is
the number of their COM port).
If you still do not get information, your COM port may be reserved in your system BIOS. You
will need to contact the manufacturer of your computer to find out how to free up the COM port.

                DeLorme GPS (PalmPilot)
                -----------------------

Pilot 1000 And 5000 Users
====================
The PalmPilot Adapter Cable's design was tested with the Pilot Professional and Personal models
that were available during the development stages of the DeLormeGPS application.  After the
cables were developed, 3Com informed us that they built some older Pilot 1000 and 5000 models
to different pin-out specifications.  Some models do not send the proper power from the first
pin.

Our manufactured Pilot/Tripmate cables rely on power from pin one.  Since in some instances it
is not supplied by the Pilot 1000 and/or 5000 models, you may need to jumper pin 4 to pin 1 to
get the needed power.  You can do this by modifying the Pilot end of the Pilot/Tripmate cable
by jumping [soldering with a small wire] pin 1 to pin 4 at this end.  If you do not wish to
manually alter [solder] the cable, we can ship a free replacement cable that has been
redesigned to accommodate the older Pilot models.  If you would like us to ship a replacement
cable to you, please contact our office.

Route Will Not HotSync
====================
If you are experiencing problems with you route not HotSyncing to your 3Com PalmPilot it could
be a couple of issues.

If you are starting the program from the autorun, it will not HotSync your route.  It will
HotSync if you choose Start...Programs...DeLorme...Street Atlas USA 5.0.   If you start the
application from there it will not be an issue.  There is a fix to this problem at:
http://www.delorme.com/support/streetatlas/842.htm

Download the driver from there and follow the instructions for registering it.

If you are using some type of third party desktop management software (e.g., Franklin's Ascent,
IntelleSync, ACT or Lotus Notes) it can cause the routes not to HotSync.  We have created an
updated setup routine for the PalmPilot to fix the problem.  If you contact this office via one
of the methods below we will send it to you. We are in the process of posting it on our Web
site.  By the time you receive this E-mail it may already be posted.  Check
http://www.delorme.com/support/ for more information.

                GPS COMPATIBILITY
                -----------------

General Compatibility Questions
==========================
AAA Map'n'Go and Street Atlas USA both have built in interfaces for GPS receivers.  They will
accept any GPS receiver that has NMEA 0183 ver 2.0 outputting at 4800 baud.  Our Software looks
for the following strings to be present in the GPS output:  GPRMC, GPGSA, GPGGA.

GPGSA-Satellite Acquisition
GPRMC-Time, Latitude, Longitude, Speed over Ground, Course over Ground and Date
GPGGA-GPS Position, Time, Fix Quality, Number of Satellites used, HDOP (Horizontal Dilution of
Precision)

If your receiver outputs those strings then it will interface correctly, and without any
additional software.  Interface cabling from the GPS unit to your laptop is available directly
from the GPS receiver manufacturer.

Garmin GPS Users
===============
Garmin GPS receivers allow extended functionality in our software.  They have the ability to
upload and download waypoints, routes and logs to our software.  To track with your Garmin, the
receiver must be set to NMEA/NMEA 0183 version 2.0.  To upload and download waypoints, the
receiver must be set to Garmin/Garmin. Use the *Garmin GPS 45 option under GPS...Initialize.

*  The Garmin GPS 45 setting is a generic Garmin setting that will provide uploading,
downloading and tracking functionality with several models of Garmin devices including the 75,
90, 38, 45, 45XL, 12, 12XL, GPS II, GPS II+, GPS III, and more.

Garmin GPS III Tips:
To get GPS tracking functionality with your Garmin GPS III, go to the Interface tab and set the
Garmin to NMEA. Then, initialize it with the *Garmin GPS 45 setting within Street Atlas USA.

To transmit GPS waypoint lists, routes and track logs to and from the Garmin, follow the steps
below.  There will be times when a different setting on the Garmin may be appropriate for the
task you'd like to perform.

1.  Go to the Garmin's Main menu.
2.  Choose Setup.
3.  Pan all the way over to the right to show the Interface Tab.
4.  Move the cursor to down to the Format field and press the ENTER button.
5.  Choose "Garmin" from the list.
6.  Move the cursor to the Transfer Mode field and press the ENTER button.
7.  Select "Request RTE" from the list and press the ENTER button [or select whatever is
appropriate for the task at hand].
8.  Open the DeLorme program.
9.  Calculate the route you want.
10. Choose GPS...Initialize from the menu bar.
11. In the GPS Initialize window, select the *Garmin GPS 45 option, the appropriate COM port
and click OK.
12. Choose GPS...Upload Directions to GPS and the route will transfer.

Once all this is done, you'll need to activate the route through the Main menu, Routes screen
[or select whatever is appropriate for the task at hand].  Please consult your Garmin User's
Guide for more information on saving, storing and transmitting Garmin routes, waypoint lists,
etc.

Magellan GPS Receivers
====================
Magellan GPS units output a proprietary NMEA that offers tracking only.  They do not offer
speed or elevation readings because of the limited information available from the device
itself.  This is not a problem with the software; it is a result of the limited NMEA messages
emanating from the receiver.

                DATA ERRORS
                -----------

Inaccurate Data - Roads missing
===========================
We try to make sure that our data is as accurate as possible, but with over 25 million street
segments and over 100 million phone listings, errors certainly are possible. We always
appreciate getting input from users.  Feel free to let us know if you find anything.  In the
future, errors should be directed to the Data Corrections Department (data@delorme.com).

Address Not Found
=================
Here are some tips when using addresses:

1. Don't use capitals.  Searches yield more results with lowercase.  (e.g., 100 elm street)
2. Don't put punctuation at the end of abbreviations.
3. You do not need to enter the entire street address.  All you need is street and ZIP Code,
separated by a comma.

The looser the search, the better.  If you put in an exact address it will only look for an
exact match. It is possible that the address is not in our database. You can bring it to the
attention of the Data Corrections Department (data@delorme.com).  They will try to include it
in future upgrades.

                PROGRAM USE
                -----------
The HelpDoc, located on the Street Atlas USA 5.0 Runtime CD or on the AAA Map'n'Go 3.0 CD, is
an Adobe Acrobat or Microsoft Word document of the entire Help system contents. The HelpDoc can
be printed out as a hard-copy reference.

Draw Features
=============
Street Atlas USA 5.0 and AAA Map'n'Go allow you to add your own text, symbols, MapNotes, lines,
circles and polygons to your maps with drag-and-drop ease.   Detailed instruction for using the
draw features is contained in the Help documentation. Press the F1 key, or Choose Help...Help
Topics from the menu bar. Click the index tab and type 'draw' in the keyword field to find the
topics.

Routing
=========
If you know where your trip will begin and end, using the Start and Finish text boxes makes
routing quick and easy.

To set your Start and Finish:

1. Place your cursor in the Start text box on the Routing toolbar (next to the green button) to
highlight the existing text.
2. Type in the placename (Street Atlas USA 5.0 users can enter an address and ZIP Code) for the
origin of your route (e.g., Portland, ME or 2 DeLorme Drive, 04096).
3. Press the TAB key on your keyboard to access the Finish text box.
4. Type in the placename (or address and ZIP Code in Street Atlas USA 5.0) of your destination
(e.g., Yarmouth, ME or 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, 20006).
5. Choose the type of route you want to calculate (i.e., Quickest, Shortest, Preferred or
Scenic) and click the tool on the Routing toolbar.

Street Atlas USA 5.0 and AAA Map'n'Go calculate your route and highlight it on the map,
automatically selecting the appropriate magnitude. In addition, a Directions window, which
provides detailed instructions for your journey, appears on the left of your screen.

Street Atlas USA 5.0 Users:
Tips for routing between addresses:
1. Do not use capital letters.

                FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
                --------------------------

Q.  Can I remove the exit service symbols from the map?
A. Unfortunately, it is not possible to remove the exit symbols from Street Atlas USA 5.0 or
AAA Map'n'Go 3.0 unless you also turn off all of the roads as well. To do this, choose
Option...Map Features from the menu bar.

Q.  How can I make the computer take the route that I want it to?
A. The routing features may occasionally route you to roads or areas you would like to avoid.
If the routing feature selects a route that fails to plot the route you specifically desire,
you can force (customize) a route to avoid certain roads and/or highways by adding "Stops" or
"Avoids". See the "Advanced Routing" section of the Help system for detailed information and
instructions.

Q. Can I get the software on floppy disks?
A. No, DeLorme software comes on CD-ROM only.

Q. How does Street Atlas USA 5.0 differ from AAA Map'n'Go 4.0?
A. AAA Map'n'Go 4.0 is a travel-planning CD-ROM designed for the vacationer. It features 68,000
AAA listings for lodgings, restaurants, campgrounds and attractions, 80 recommended scenic
drives, 1,000,000 miles of routable roads and much more. Street Atlas USA 5.0 includes some of
the same features as AAA Map'n'Go 4.0, but it also calculates door-to-door routes. If you'd
like to plan a vacation, we recommend AAA Map'n'Go 4.0 and if you'd like the most detailed maps
available and would like to route trips door-to-door, we recommend Street Atlas USA 5.0.

Q. I'm a Windows 3.1 user and don't plan to get Windows 95. Isn't there any way to run Street
Atlas USA 5.0 on my system?
A. We offer a special data update to people who run Windows 3.1 and own Street Atlas USA 4.0.
You'll be able to update your current program with all the newest mapping and street
information contained in Street Atlas USA 5.0. The update costs $19.95.*

Q: When will Street Atlas USA 5.0 be available for Macintosh users?
A: We've just released Street Atlas USA 4.0 and the DeLorme GpsTripmate receiver for the
Macintosh. As long as you register your products with us, we will notify you if we release a
Macintosh version of Street Atlas USA 5.0.

Q: Will AAA Map'n'Go 4.0 allow me to do street-to-street routing?
A: AAA Map'n'Go 4.0 routes the quickest, shortest, preferred or most scenic routes from place
to place (such as cities or towns) or to or from any of the 68,000 AAA listings for lodgings,
restaurants, campgrounds and attractions. You may also choose any point on the maps and route
from that location. Although it will search for and locate specific street addresses within
designated metropolitan areas, it will not route between them or between specific streets.

Q. I did the full install of AAA Map'n'Go 3.0, why don't I see maps?
A. If you choose the 200 MB install from AAA Map'n'Go 3.0, that does not mean that you can run
it without the CD unless you have extracted information from Street Atlas USA 4.0.  The 200 MB
option installs the AAA Map'n'Go 3.0 connectivity database and the AAA information.  The road
data remains on the CD.  Therefore, running without the CD is not possible unless you have
extracted information from Street Atlas USA 4.0.   This will give you all of the Street Atlas
USA 4.0 data with AAA Map'n'Go 3.0's routing.

Q: How current is the data?
A: The AAA data that is included in AAA Map'n'Go 4.0 is directly from the 1998 AAA Tour Book.
It includes current information about AAA-approved lodgings, restaurants, campgrounds and
attractions. Our mapping data is developed from a variety of public and private sources, so
before a product is released, the maps are continuously being updated. Because of that, we
cannot provide one specific date to which the data is current.

Q: Can you draw on or edit the maps?
A: AAA Map'n'Go 4.0 and Street Atlas USA 5.0 have draw functions that enable you to customize
the maps with MapNotes, text and/or a wide selection of symbols, as well as the ability to draw
lines, circles and polygons and measure their areas and distances.

Q. What is 3-D Explorer USA?
A. 3-D Explorer USA provides a unique, three-dimensional view of the continental US, with real
elevation information from the US Geological Survey. This program lets users explore America as
they've never seen it before. Using either a joystick or a keyboard and a mouse, users can soar
over the Rocky Mountains, into the Grand Canyon, up the coast of Maine or anywhere else in the
country. 3-D Explorer USA is fun and easy to use and very true to life, since it uses real
topographic information.

Q.  Do I need to have a joystick to operate 3-D Explorer USA? What is different with the
joystick?
A. No. 3-D Explorer USA works fine with just a mouse. A joystick allows users to change
elevation, speed and direction with one motion, but it is not required.

Q.  How is GpsTripmate different from other GPS receivers on the market?
A.  GpsTripmate is a single-function receiver that is made to receive GPS signals from
satellites and process them directly for display on Street Atlas USA 5.0 or AAA Map'n'Go 4.0
maps. Compared with other GPS receivers on the market, GpsTripmate is very inexpensive, around
$150, and easy to use.

Q.  How do Street Atlas USA 5.0 and AAA Map'n'Go 4.0 use GpsTripmate?
A.  GpsTripmate is an easy-to-use, single-function receiver, connecting to a computer's
nine-pin mouse port via a single cable. It is designed to rest on a vehicle's dashboard, as
close to the windshield as possible for the best reception. To begin a journey, users start up
Street Atlas USA 5.0 or AAA Map'n'Go 4.0 and initialize the receiver using a basic menu
function. An arrow indicates their position on a Street Atlas USA 5.0 or AAA Map'n'Go 4.0 map,
in real time, and moves as the vehicle moves.

Q.  Is GpsTripmate difficult to use? How does it connect to my computer?
A. Not at all. GpsTripmate was designed to be effortless to use. All you have to do is connect
the GpsTripmate cable to the back of your computer via the com port, place the receiver on your
dashboard, and view the route of your trip in real time, on detailed Street Atlas USA 5.0 or
AAA Map'n'Go 4.0 maps.

Q.  Will GpsTripmate work with any other mapping software systems?
A. No. GpsTripmate is designed to work only with DeLorme's Street Atlas USA 5.0 or AAA Map'n'Go
4.0.

Q.  How is GpsTripmate powered? How do I turn it on?
A.  GpsTripmate is powered with four "AA" size batteries, which last around 10 hours of
continuous use. There is no external on or off switch. When the unit is plugged into the
computer, the receiver is automatically initialized and signals begin to be processed. The
batteries can be changed by removing the two black screws on the bottom of the GpsTripmate
case, making sure to replace the batteries in the proper order (see diagram in case).

registered users about product upgrades as soon as we can.

A: The data is as accurate as the white and yellow pages across the country.

Q: Can I return just one CD if it's damaged?
A: Yes, we will replace any individual damaged CD.

Q: What is GPS MapKit
A: GPS MapKit is CD-ROM software designed to work with printed maps. Simply choose three
latitude/longitude points on the map, mark them and scan the map. Once the print map is
scanned, GPS MapKit will ask the user for those three points. The software will then geocode
the entire map, enabling it to be used for tracking with a global positioning system, like the
DeLorme GpsTripmate receiver. When the GPS receiver is initialized, the exact location appears
on the map and the screen will move automatically as you travel. GPS MapKit is also compatible
with any recommended GPS device with a NMEA output.
